WKZE

WKZE FM 98.1 Sharon, CT

In January 1986, the FCC added 98.1 MHz to the table of allotments for Salisbury, Connecticut as part of the Commission's "80-90 Docket". ChartComm Inc, owned by Warren Gregory of Sharon, CT., then owner of WKZE-AM, applied for and was granted a construction permit for the new FM station in March of 1988. The allotment was assigned the WKZE-FM call letters by the FCC on March 10, 1988. From that point, the construction permit was extended five times until the station was licensed in 1993.
The station first went on the air February 16, 1993.
WKZE AM and FM was sold to Tri State Broadcasting, owned by Stan Gurell and Ira Levy of Salisbury, CT. In following years, the stations were purchased by Scott Johnson, Johnson Development, and then by Willpower Radio owned by Barbara and Will Stanley. Willpower Radio moved WKZE FM to Red Hook N.Y. after taking over, at the same time, Willpower L.M.A.'d WKZE AM 1020 to Tri-State Public Communications with a change of call letters to WHDD. WHDD was purchased by Tri-State Public Communications in November of 2009 and operates in Sharon with sister station WHDD FM 919 at 67 Main Street.
